Cleaning Operator (Audiovisual Carrier Preparation)

About the role

The Cleaning Operator ensures that audiovisual carriers such as tapes, film reels, and cassettes are meticulously cleaned and prepared for digitisation. Working in a contamination‑free environment, you will protect valuable media heritage by maintaining the highest cleanliness standards.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, handle, and inspect carriers according to internal protocols and client specifications.
• Clean carriers using manual and mechanical tools, following format‑specific procedures.
• Identify and report any damage, mold, warping, or magnetic layer issues.
• Label, track, and store carriers before and after cleaning.
• Monitor cleaning stations, conduct routine equipment checks, and record cleaning actions.
• Collaborate with imaging, ingest, and restoration teams for efficient hand‑off of cleaned materials.
• Suggest process improvements and flag inefficiencies.

Required profile

• Secondary education; technical or vocational diploma preferred.
• Experience handling fragile or historical materials is a plus.
• Interest in preservation, archiving, or audiovisual heritage.
• Methodical, safety‑conscious, and able to work independently or in a team.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of audiovisual carrier types (U‑Matic, VHS, Betacam, audiotapes).
• Manual dexterity for delicate material handling.
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures precisely.
• Good record‑keeping and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with basic data‑entry tools such as Excel.
