Maintenance Engineer - Mechanical

About the role

The Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and optimal performance of all mechanical assets in a heavy‑industry steel plant. You will lead preventive and predictive maintenance programs, troubleshoot breakdowns, and drive continuous improvement across the facility.

Key responsibilities

• Execute and optimise preventive (PM) and predictive (PdM) maintenance schedules for all mechanical equipment.
• Oversee maintenance of heavy steel plant machinery such as electric arc furnaces, ladle furnaces, continuous casting machines, reheating furnaces, rolling stands, shears, and cooling beds.
• Lead root‑cause analysis on chronic or catastrophic failures and provide rapid technical support during unplanned breakdowns.
• Supervise, mentor and allocate daily tasks to a team of mechanical technicians and fitters while enforcing safety protocols (LOTO, confined spaces, heat‑stress management).
• Manage critical spare‑parts inventory, forecast needs and approve technical specifications for new components.
• Identify bottlenecks and propose engineering modifications to improve efficiency, lifespan and safety of machinery.
• Utilise a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work orders, history and KPIs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
• 5–7 years of mechanical maintenance experience in heavy industry (steel, mining or oil & gas), preferably in a steel plant.
• Ability to work in demanding environments and perform physical tasks on the shop floor.

Required skills

• High‑pressure hydraulic and pneumatic system expertise (proportional valves, cylinders, pumps).
• Heavy machinery alignment, welding techniques, lubrication systems and vibration analysis.
• Reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints, P&IDs and hydraulic schematics.
• Root‑cause analysis and troubleshooting of mechanical failures.
• Proficiency with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
