Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer (Design)

About the role

Egis, an international engineering, consulting and construction firm active in the Middle East, is hiring a Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer (Design) in Cairo. You will lead the design of tunnel ventilation systems (TVS), 1-D and 3-D simulation analysis, fire life safety studies and associated HVAC design for Metro, High-Speed Rail, Road Tunnel and major infrastructure projects, in line with international standards and UAE / KSA local authority regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform 1-D simulation analysis (IDA Tunnel / SES) for normal, congestion and emergency/fire scenarios, including pressure transients, for underground stations, running tunnels and escape routes.
• Carry out 3-D CFD smoke and fire modelling (FDS / PyroSim, ANSYS) to assess smoke movement, back-layering and evacuation tenability, complying with NFPA 130 / NFPA 502.
• Prepare ventilation design calculations, including fresh-air requirements, jet-fan sizing and fan selection, and develop ventilation strategies and mode-of-operation tables.
• Carry out HVAC heat load calculations (HAP) for underground stations and utility buildings, and design fan rooms, plant rooms, shafts and dampers.
• Prepare and review design documents such as the Basis of Design, calculation reports, technical specifications, datasheets and layout drawings.
• Work on EPC / Design & Build projects, including tendering, BOQ preparation, material requisitions and technical bid evaluations, and support construction teams with TQs / RFIs.
• Take part in design reviews, HAZID, constructability and 3D / BIM model reviews, and collaborate with civil, architecture, structure, electrical, fire protection, signalling and other MEP disciplines.
• Lead TVS and fire life safety design independently and mentor junior engineers and BIM modellers.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; a Master's degree is an advantage.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in tunnel ventilation and fire life safety design, including metro, rail and/or road tunnel projects.
• Registration with the UAE Society of Engineers or the Saudi Council of Engineers (or eligibility); Chartered status preferred.
• Experience on GCC infrastructure projects is highly desirable.
• Able to work on and support multiple projects simultaneously.

Required skills

• Proficiency in IDA Tunnel and/or SES, FDS / PyroSim, ANSYS Fluent / CFX and Carrier HAP.
• Familiarity with evacuation modelling tools (Pathfinder, STEPS) is an advantage.
• Knowledge of NFPA 130, NFPA 502, PIARC, TSI, ASHRAE, UAE Fire and Life Safety Code, SBC and BS/EN standards.
• Working knowledge of installation, testing and commissioning of tunnel ventilation systems.
