Substation Automation and Protection Intern

About the role

GE Vernova offers an internship in Substation Automation and Protection in Cairo, where you will work on meaningful projects, collaborate with experienced professionals and develop your leadership and communication skills while learning the GE Vernova way. The internship gives hands-on exposure to Substation Automation Systems (SAS), Control and Protection panels, Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) in high voltage and extra high voltage applications.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate on improving existing Substation Automation and Protection solutions and developing new, commercially viable features.
• Contribute to pilot projects and initiatives shaping the future of Grid Automation.
• Contribute to engineering and field services for Substation Automation Systems, including DCS and RTU.
• Contribute to engineering and field services for Protection, Control and Tele-Protection panels.
• Support the design of substation LAN networks and communication architectures, and configure industrial Ethernet switches, routers and satellite clocks/time synchronization systems.
• Follow the department's standard design processes.

Required profile

• Recently completed a Bachelor's degree (5-year program) in Electrical, Electronics, Control or Communications Engineering, or a closely related technical field, from an accredited university.
• Basic understanding of electrical power systems, single-line diagrams and basic protection/interlocking principles.
• Basic understanding of Substation Automation Systems (IEC 61850) for HV/EHV substations.
• Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Commitment to full-time work (48 hours per week) during the internship, willingness to work in the office and on site, and willingness to travel without limits.
• Fluency in English and Arabic (oral, reading and writing).

Nice to have: familiarity with protective relays, MODBUS, IEC 60870-5-101/104, T103 and SNMP, and CCNA or equivalent IT/OT networking knowledge.
