Assistant Manager – Banking Legal Services (Project & Asset Finance)

About the role

The Assistant Manager in Banking Legal Services will support the Director and Manager in delivering legal solutions that align with the Bank’s mission to expand African trade. This role focuses on project, asset finance, and export development matters, ensuring legal risk is managed while supporting profitable growth.

Key responsibilities

• Provide commercial legal advice on banking and finance matters to the Bank and its subsidiaries.
• Advise on special projects and identify potential legal risks.
• Manage a portfolio of distressed credit facilities, aiming to minimize loss and maximize recoveries.
• Negotiate and draft legal documents with counterparties under the guidance of senior legal leadership.
• Coordinate with external counsel on loan recovery, restructuring, litigation, and asset attachment.
• Recommend solutions for loan work‑out strategies to reduce credit risk.
• Support business activities through legal research, precedent development, and documentation standardisation.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert on loan remediation and restructuring, participating in internal committees and advocacy initiatives.

Required profile

• Legal qualification with experience in banking, finance, or asset‑finance law.
• Demonstrated ability to handle distressed credit portfolios and loan restructuring.
• Strong analytical skills and capacity to assess legal risks in complex transactions.
• Experience working with external counsel and managing litigation processes.
