Consultant – Desk Review of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis (EMR)

About the role

The consultant will lead a mixed‑methods desk review of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) across the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, with a focus on MER‑supported countries. The work will analyse routine notification data, programme documents and published literature to identify epidemiological patterns, diagnostic and service‑delivery challenges, and evidence gaps.

Key responsibilities

• Assess EPTB epidemiology, trends and determinants region‑wide and in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen.
• Produce an inception report, a regional technical report, seven country briefs, a policy brief, an Excel dashboard and a diagnostic‑surveillance gap matrix.
• Review demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes and service‑delivery challenges, and formulate recommendations for WHO EMRO, national TB programmes and Global Fund interventions.

Required profile

• Minimum first university degree; advanced degree (epidemiology, public health, infectious diseases, TB) – PhD desirable.
• 5‑10 years of experience in TB control, disease surveillance, epidemiology or public‑health programme analysis, including desk reviews and technical report writing.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse routine health data, synthesize multiple data sources and produce policy‑oriented documents.
• Expert knowledge of English; working knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
• Medical clearance and ability to work remotely from place of residence.
