Legal Adviser – International Humanitarian Law (Cairo)

About the role

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is looking for a Legal Adviser to join its Regional IHL Team in Cairo. Reporting to the Regional Legal Adviser, you will support delegations across the region by providing expert advice on international humanitarian law and related national legal matters.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse situations and advise delegations on applicable national and international legal frameworks.
• Draft legal notes, analyses, and contribute to working papers, summary reports and “non‑papers”.
• Conduct independent research on specific legal issues and broader national legal systems.
• Support IHL dissemination activities for specialised audiences and the public.
• Provide legal advice and technical assistance to national authorities.
• Monitor developments in the implementation of IHL and international human rights law.
• Represent the Regional IHL team in meetings with external partners and maintain academic contacts.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in law, preferably with a focus on international humanitarian law.
• Relevant professional experience in legal analysis, research and advisory functions.
• Ability to work independently and coordinate with regional legal coordinators.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
