Staff Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Backend to design and build scalable, secure systems that power almentor’s core learning platform. In this senior position you will lead architecture decisions, mentor engineers and collaborate with product, design and front‑end teams to deliver high‑impact solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement robust, scalable, and secure backend services using modern frameworks and best practices.
• Define technical strategy, architecture, and long‑term roadmap for critical backend components.
• Work closely with product managers, designers and front‑end/mobile engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Improve system performance, reliability, observability and maintainability through proactive monitoring.
• Mentor and guide other backend engineers, conduct code reviews and uphold engineering excellence.
• Participate in sprint planning, write technical documentation and contribute to cross‑team initiatives.

Required profile

• 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 2 years in a technical leadership or mentorship role.
• Deep expertise in a modern object‑oriented backend language.
• Proven experience designing and operating large‑scale distributed systems with high availability.
• Strong knowledge of databases, caching strategies and API design.
• Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker) and cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP.
• Excellent problem‑solving, debugging and communication skills.
