Manager, Banking Legal Services (Anglophone)

About the role

Afreximbank is recruiting an Anglophone Manager for its Banking Legal Services team in Cairo, reporting to the Director (Banking Legal Services). The role supports the Legal Department in delivering legally sound, commercially focused advice on banking and finance matters, with a long-term strategy aligned to the Bank's overall business strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Advise the Bank and its subsidiaries on banking and finance matters, special projects and initiatives, and identify potential legal risks
• Help plan, organise and implement legal support for business activities, research precedents and draft standardised documentation
• Guide the application and interpretation of laws and regulations and help build controls against legal risk
• Act as subject-matter expert on the Bank's loan products and advise on borrowings in international capital and money markets, including negotiation of legal documentation
• Advise on asset and liability management, equity participations, grants and co-financing with multilateral and bilateral institutions
• Represent the Bank in negotiations, disputes and proceedings, and conduct deal appraisals and legal due diligence
• Negotiate legal documents with counterparties and manage the legal workstreams of ongoing transactions
• Coordinate external legal counsel to ensure value for money
• Take part in internal committees and advocacy work, and report compliance issues to the Compliance Department

Required profile

• Postgraduate degree in Law from a recognised university and a diploma in legal practice from a recognised bar course
• At least 8 years of professional legal practice, with emphasis on banking and financial services
• Experience with cross-border trade and project finance documentation (structured trade and corporate finance, project and asset-based finance, guarantees, sovereign lending, private equity)
• Good knowledge of banking practices in Africa and ability to communicate with senior officials of banks, corporates and governments

Required skills

• Excellent English, with French, Arabic or Portuguese as an added advantage
• Strong drafting skills and ability to explain complex issues clearly
• Familiarity with trade and project finance, treasury and transnational transactions
• Ability to work under strict deadlines and negotiate with non-legal professionals
