Material Handling Engineer

About the role

The Material Handling Engineer joins GM's Supply Chain team and works onsite at the GM office. The role leads the operations team that receives, unboxes, stores, and distributes material to meet daily production targets while controlling cost and ensuring safety.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with GM safety and environmental standards through regular tours and assessments.
• Drive operator engagement to meet Business Plan targets in safety, quality, cost, and responsiveness using GMS tools.
• Lead daily operations meetings, review area scorecards, and act on performance deviations.
• Support production floor needs, participate in continuous‑improvement workshops, and manage engineering change, prototype, and pilot programs.
• Audit material records, analyze variances, and coordinate with committees to address shortages or excess.
• Collaborate with material‑flow and packaging engineers to optimise equipment layout, improve packaging, and maintain lean, safe operations.
• Oversee shop‑floor escalation tools (NCRs, ESC, TPM, maintenance work orders) and ensure adherence to local and global procedures, ISO standards, and internal controls.

Required profile

• Engineering Bachelor’s degree.
• 1–2 years of experience in material handling, logistics, or related engineering field.
• Strong communication, cross‑functional collaboration, problem‑solving, and continuous‑improvement mindset.

Required skills

• Global Manufacturing System (GMS) tools.
• Lean Material Strategy.
• ISO standards compliance.
• Experience with NCRs, ESC, TPM processes.
