Senior Backend Developer

About the role

Hypercell is looking for an experienced Senior Backend Developer to join its engineering team in Erbil, Iraq. You will design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that power enterprise‑grade web and mobile applications for digital payment solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs.
• Build secure, high‑performance applications that support critical business operations.
• Design and optimise database schemas, queries and data models for relational and NoSQL stores.
• Integrate third‑party systems, payment gateways and enterprise platforms.
• Participate in architecture discussions and influence technical decisions.
• Write clean, maintainable, well‑documented code following best practices.
• Conduct code reviews and mentor junior developers.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues and performance bottlenecks.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, QA engineers, DevOps and business stakeholders.
• Support CI/CD initiatives and improve automation pipelines.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong foundation in computer‑science fundamentals such as data structures, algorithms, concurrency and distributed systems.
• Proven experience delivering production‑grade backend applications and APIs.
• Leadership mindset with the ability to mentor and guide junior team members.

Required skills

• Java programming language.
• Spring and Quarkus frameworks.
• Object‑Oriented Programming, design patterns and clean architecture.
• RESTful API design and implementation.
• Relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Database performance tuning and query optimisation.
• Authentication, authorization, encryption and secure coding practices.
