British Sign Language Specialist – AI Trainer (Freelance)

About the role

We are seeking a British Sign Language (BSL) specialist to train large‑scale AI language models. As a freelance AI trainer you will work remotely, providing high‑quality BSL data and feedback to improve model translation, classification, and cultural accuracy.

Key responsibilities

• Interact with AI models on real‑world BSL communication scenarios and theoretical linguistic questions.
• Evaluate model outputs for linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and visual grammar.
• Document failure modes, capture reproducible error traces, and suggest improvements to prompt engineering and evaluation metrics.
• Provide detailed annotations on BSL‑to‑English translation, classifier usage, facial expressions, spatial grammar, and regional variations.

Required profile

• Fluent in British Sign Language with deep knowledge of BSL grammar, syntax, non‑manual markers, fingerspelling and regional dialects.
• Background in Deaf studies, sign language interpreting, linguistics or related field (bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred).
• Experience with RID certification, teaching, or community interpreting is a plus.
• Ability to communicate metacognitively and “show your work” in written reports.

What we offer

• Hourly rate between $6 and $65, determined by experience, expertise and location.
