American Sign Language (ASL) AI Trainer – Freelance

About the role

We are seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) specialist to help train large‑scale language models. As a freelance AI trainer, you will provide high‑quality ASL data that improves model translation, classification, and cultural understanding, ultimately enhancing accessibility for Deaf and Hard‑of‑Hearing communities.

Key responsibilities

• Interact with AI models on real‑world ASL communication scenarios and theoretical linguistic questions.
• Verify linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and capture detailed error traces.
• Document failure modes in ASL‑to‑English translation, classifier usage, facial expressions, and spatial grammar.
• Suggest improvements to prompt engineering, evaluation metrics, and data collection processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Linguistics, or a related field.
• Professional fluency in ASL, including grammar, syntax, non‑manual markers, fingerspelling, and regional variations.
• Experience with RID certification, teaching, or community interpreting projects is a strong plus.
• Ability to communicate metacognitively and “show your work” in documentation.
