Senior Assistant Manufacturing Operations

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Assistant in Manufacturing Operations to join the chip yard crew at Smurfit Westrock. The role supports the Saltwell Chip Mill Manager and Shift Leader in handling, storing, and processing wood into chips while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as log cranes, chipper, knuckle boom, skid steer and front‑end loaders.
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
• Install and uninstall water pipes to keep wood piles wet.
• Operate small equipment including clean‑up tractors, trucks, boom trucks and push mowers for yard upkeep.
• Maintain cleanliness of grounds and buildings, including sweeping, mopping and mowing.
• Provide guidance to crew members and assist maintenance personnel when needed.
• Follow all safety rules, procedures and company guidelines.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• 1–2 years of on‑the‑job training or relevant experience.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and perform basic calculations.
• Willingness to cross‑train on various equipment.
• Physical ability to exert 10‑70 lb of force and climb stairs over 20 ft.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
